Transport measures that reduce and shift car traffic are key to redistributing public space more fairly and enabling sustainable mobility. While such measures can already be well simulated in transport models, their links to climate and biodiversity impacts are often missing. The visionary aspect lies in developing modelling scenarios that integrate measures with cross-sectoral impacts. Since targeted changes in modal split cannot be derived by working backwards from desired outcomes, a continuous exchange and feedback loop is essential to implement transport measures in a targeted and effective manner.
This project applies an integrated modelling approach in Erfurt, Vienna, and Zurich to better understand these interactions.

Urban green spaces and sustainable rainwater management play a key role in improving urban microclimate and supporting climate adaptation. Within the project, these effects are simulated with a focus on integrated blue-green infrastructure and surface desealing.
In Vienna and Zurich, advanced climate and flood models are combined with detailed 3D urban data to assess heat reduction and pluvial flood mitigation. Building on previous research, this approach enables precise, design-oriented solutions for climate-resilient urban development.

In urban environments, not only the availability but also the accessibility of resources determines whether animal species can thrive. Urban landscapes are often fragmented by barriers such as roads and buildings, making ecological connectivity—a key factor for daily movement between habitats—essential.
Within the project, a dedicated model is used to assess this small-scale connectivity and better understand how urban structures influence urban wildlife movement. Applied for the European hedgehog and the common blackbird in Vienna and Zurich, the approach identifies connected habitats, that are permeable for urban wildlife species. The framework also allows for the evaluation of future planning scenarios i.e. when green spaces are removed or added showing how these changes to the urban landscape alter the connectivity of habitats. In this way, the connectivity modelling framework can  supportwildlife and thus biodiversity-sensitive urban design.

Urban sounds are simulated to assess how mobility changes and nature-based solutions affect the soundscape. A data-based audiovisual simulation of car and bird sounds in a realistic virtual 3D model is making spatial and acoustic transformations tangible and easy to interpret. To this end, transport simulation models are coupled with a game engine to inform the path and speed of cars and a synthesizer is used to generate the respective sounds. Ecological models of the occurrence of specific bird types in relation to the land cover and use inform the localization of bird sounds.

A key aspect of the project is co-creation, bringing together partners, stakeholders and master students to jointly develop, test, and refine case study designs, alongside continuous evaluation of both, outcomes and collaboration.

Co-creation takes place at three levels: within the consortium (CW), in local stakeholder processes in each partner city, and in international workshops bringing together stakeholders from Vienna and Zurich respectively - depending on project phase - all partner cities (ISW).

Local stakeholders include city administrations, planning and environmental consultancies, and local initiatives working on urban street transformation. Together, they explore new spatial potentials by rethinking existing streetscapes through an integrated, model-supported approach. 

A dedicated internal task force ensures ongoing coordination within the consortium, while a co-creative evaluation framework supports joint reflection on results, impacts, transferability, and the process itself.
