The study area in Erfurt is located around the Old Town Erfurt, where dense urban structure and high traffic volumes intersect. Surrounding neighborhoods absorb significant through-traffic due to limited direct cross-city routes, particularly along major multi-lane roads.

The adjacent districts—Andreasvorstadt, Krämpfervorstadt, and Johannesvorstadt—represent transitional urban areas where historic fabric meets post-war and newer development, resulting in a diverse mix of building types, street profiles, and mobility patterns.

Characterised by dense urban fabric and often car-dominated streets, these areas offer strong potential for rethinking public space, improving multimodal mobility, and implementing climate-resilient street design. Their central location ensures high visibility and makes them a representative case study context.
